The George Old Car Show started in 1997 on Paul Fick’s farm ”Blackwood” near Victoria Bay. A total of 80 cars where on show and food stalls were provided by the Lions Club. It was soon realized that bigger grounds were to be found for the next show.
The 2nd show was held at the George Riding Club in 1998 and approximately 250 cars and tractors were on show. The new car dealers were invited to display their latest models and the show was well supported by the public. Various displays like dog show, gymnastics, parade by horses as well as drive pasts by car clubs to show off their cars, entertained the public. A large variety of arts in the park and food stalls as well as a well-stocked beer garden entertained those who were tired of looking at cars. A model car show was also laid on.
The George Old Car Show was held at the riding club until 2000 when we once again ran out of space and had to seek for bigger grounds.
The 4th George Old Car Show was moved to the P.W. Botha College in York Street, George. Ample space for show cars, tractors and motorcycles is available on the site as well as large grounds for public parking. The hostels are available for accommodation to exhibitors. A full time arena program kept the public’s attention. The school provided food stalls and the income benefited the school fund.
The 8th George Old Car Show was held in February 2004 and by now rated as the 2nd largest motor show in South Africa and supported by CAR Magazine. A total of 750 cars dated from 1901 to the latest models were on show. Fourty beautifully restored tractors were on show and demonstrated to the public by driving through the arena with running commentary. A large variety of motorcycles were on display. The model car show proved to be more popular than ever and more than 5000 models were on display and for sale. The “arts in the park” has also grown to a show on its own. Various motor clubs were in attendance. As this is not a static show all clubs has the opportunity to take part in a drive past to show off their pride and joy.
The 10th George Old Car Show took place on the 11th & 12th February 2006. The very successful show had some very rare and spectacular vehicles on display, including a 1902 Wolseley and a 1907 Stanley Steamer. Also on display were no less than nine Model T Fords dating form 1911 to 1926.
The 11th George Old Car Show was hosted on the 10th & 10th February 2007 at the P.W. Botha College grounds in George. Unfortunately inclement weather prevented many people from attending the show. The rain cleared up early on Saturday however, and thousands of people were able to enjoy the display of some very interesting and special cars. Sunday was a different story and the rain kept falling, resulting in the show being cancelled for the Sunday.
In 2008 the show dates had to be altered from the usual 2nd week in February to the 1st week to prevent a clash with the Classic Car Race in Killarney. The 12th George Old Car Show thus took place on the 2nd & 3rd February 2008 at the same venue in George.
The 13th George Old Car Show on the 31st January and 1st February 2009 was probably the most spectacular show yet. The theme for the show was the Chronological Development of the motorcar from 1900. The oldest car on display was the 1886 Benz Patent Wagen. Many veteran tractors, stationary engines, motor cycles as well as model cars were also on display. The show was visited by 12000 people while 900 vehicles were on display.
The 14th George Old Car Show took place on 13 & 14th February 2010. The show was once again a huge success in perfect weather. For this show the emphasis was on tractors and stationary engines. Approximately 10 000 visitors passed through the gates and there were over 900 cars on display. The ever popular model car display, as usual also attracted many visitors.
