As the nearest old car clubs were in Cape Town and Port
Elizabeth, it was decided by several enthusiasts in George
to start a club in this area. A group of nine old car
owners and enthusiasts held an inaugural meeting on 3 June
1988, and so the Southern Cape Old Car Club was born. A
sum of R35 was collected to cover initial stationery and
postage costs!
Under the auspices
of the Eastern Province Veteran Car Club to begin with,
the club held monthly outings for the ever-growing number
of members. Soon we were accepted by SAVVA and became an
independent club. Our constitution was drafted and sent to
members, and plans were made to design a club logo.
Annelise Bezuidenhout submitted the winning design in a
competition amongst members.
The newsletter was
called "The Spanner", and was distributed regularly as
were monthly notices detailing outings and events. The
most popular of events was the sponsored annual Delta
Rally.
In 1995 two
members, Mike Roumanoff and Robin Meeks organized the
SAVVA Nedbank Post 45 National rally, for the SCOCC, which
was a spider rally starting at the Ashmead resort in
Knysna. A total of 85 vehicles took part in the event
which proved to be very successful. In 1996, they again
organized the SAVVA Nedbank Vintage & Post Vintage
National Rally for the SCOCC, this event started in
Mosselbay at the Santos Protea Hotel and ended at the Far
Hills Hotel in George. A total of 68 vehicles took part in
this successful event.
In 2001 the first
Rag Top Tour was organized under the auspices the SCOCC
and Mike & Robin have continued to organize these runs for
our club on a biannual basis which are always over
subscribed.
In
1997 the SCOCC organized the first George
Old Car Show,
which was held on a smallholding. This popular
annual event has developed during the years
into a major display of approximately 700
vehicles.
Two of the
original founder members are currently serving on the
SCOCC Committee and the membership has grown to
approximately 180 families.
